THE VARIOUS AGE GRADES IN ABATETE (BOTH PAST AND PRESENT)

THE VARIOUS AGEGRADES IN ABATETE(BOTH PAST AND PRESENT)

An age grade (ogbo in Igbo language) is a form of social organization based on age within a series of such categories through  which individuals pass over the course of their lives. So far Abatete (especially Owelle Aka n'ato)has witnessed 17 age grades since the inception of the age grade inception in the town. For posterity sake I would like to mention them.
(1) ogbo isianwu (head of a bee was the first age grade)
(2) ogbo irugo     ( face of an eagle was the second age grade)
(3) ogbo otakagu ( was the third age grade)
(4) ogbo Akamma ( head of a matchet or cutlass was the fourth age grade)
(5) ogbo Ekwueme  (was the fifth age grade)
(6) ogbo Anamekwulumma (was the sixth age grade)
(7) ogbo Okona ( named after district commissioner O'Connor during the colonial era was the 7th)
(8) ogbo Umumma (was the eight age grade )
(9) ogbo Umuoyibo (was the ninth age grade )
(10) ogbo Osoagha or obialun'agha (formed after the civil war was the 10th)
(11) ogbo Obialunego (was the 11th age grade)
(12) ogbo  Udoka        (was the 12th age grade)
(13) ogbo Njikoka      (was the 13th age grade)
(14) ogbo Oganiru     ( was the 14th age grade)
(15) ogbo Igwebuike  (was the 15th age grade)
(16) ogbo Ifeadigo     (formed when electricity was first installed in Abatete was the 16th)
(17) ogbo Ekwueme (II) ( was the seventeenth)
please I stand to be corrected if there is error in what I have written .somebody who thinks he knows our various age grades better should tell us. Thank you.
